Brain vs. Brawn: Increasing Head Trauma Awareness
A professional football player will receive an estimated 900 to 1500 blows to the head every season and many of these collisions result in undocumented concussions. Although football season is over, apprehension about concussion related injuries in America has far from ended.
The national public health institute of the United States defines a concussion as a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Concussions can have long-term impacts on young athletes, such as on their health, memory, and learning ability.
Football isn’t the only sport garnering attention from concussion related injuries. Soccer is statistically a close second when it comes to the number of head related injuries. In fact, soccer is the most common sport with head trauma risk for females with a 50% chance for concussion. According to the University of Pittsburgh’s Brain Trauma Research Center, more than 300,000 sports-related concussions occur annually in the United States.
Sports such as football have raised awareness for the seriousness of concussions, but head injuries are not limited to athletics either. Over the past decade, concussions have become an issue across all industries. Aside from sporting events, head trauma is commonly caused by automobile and biking accidents, and by falls around the home or on the playground. Young children and older adults are especially susceptible to these types of injuries.
Now it’s more important than ever for people to be educated about concussion management. In fact, concussions are so prevalent now that Insurance companies are offering liability waivers and legal assistance to policyholders in industries such as amateur sports as well as health & fitness markets in an attempt to protect their organizations from litigation. These concussion liability waivers offer a significant cost savings benefit to clients in these trades and provide a strong defense from legal action against their business due to concussion related injury.
We strongly recommend that individuals as well as businesses educate themselves on the effects of concussions and more importantly prevention methods in order to maintain a safe and healthy occupational or recreational environment.
