Hurricane Preparation Should Include a Homeowner’s Insurance Review
Insurance companies throughout the state of Florida are advising policyholders to be prepared for hurricane season. With weather experts predicting an active storm season, those Floridians who fail to take pre-emptive measures, instead opting to weather the storm, may endure the agony of Mother Nature’s aftermath.
The National Hurricane Center offers common advice in routine preparation for hurricane season, with an emphasis on contact information and strategic planning. Keeping a list of contact information such as the local Emergency Management Office, law enforcement, county public safety and fire rescue may prove an invaluable resource in a natural disaster. Equally important is the need for anticipation, proactively assembling a disaster supply kit and an emergency plan, including food and water safety as well as an evacuation route.
Preparation for a natural disaster means more than just bracing for a volatile storm. Hurricane readiness should also include anticipating the storms’ potential repercussions to personal property and dwellings. “Hurricane preparedness should be viewed as more than making sure you have a family plan and three days of supplies available,” says former President/CEO and Executive Director of Citizens Property Insurance, Scott Wallace. “It also means being prepared to rebuild if your property is damaged or destroyed by a storm.”
Moore Resources Insurance Agency encourages all policy holders take the following action to insure that their homes and property are adequately covered in the event of a hurricane:
- Make sure insurance coverage amounts match the replacement value of your home.
- Consider purchasing additional coverage, such as flood insurance, which is not covered under your Citizens policy.
- Review your annual hurricane deductible, which is typically 2% – 5% of the insured value of your home.
- Check to see if you have actual cash value or replacement coverage for your belongings. Actual cash value coverage only pays the depreciated value of your property.
- Verify that your policy information is correct. Make sure your mortgage company information accurately appears on your policy.
- Keep your policy documents safe. Place copies of your policy in your safe deposit box or leave them with an out-of-town relative.
- Try to have pictures or a video recording of your home and belongings.
